Western red cedar is widely considered the best wood for residential fencing. Its natural oils make it resistant to rot, decay, and insects without chemical treatment. Cedar accepts stain easily, maintains its appearance for decades, and performs exceptionally well in Pennsylvania's climate. Pressure-treated pine is a reliable, more affordable alternative where budget is the primary consideration.
Post-and-rail and basic picket fences built from pressure-treated pine are the most affordable wood fence options. Shadow box and tongue-and-groove styles cost more due to higher material requirements. Cedar is more expensive than pine upfront, but its longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs make it more economical over time.
Board-on-board and tongue-and-groove cedar fences typically last the longest, 20 to 30 years with proper maintenance.
